Potentials and challenges of high field MRS; Neurochemical profile:

چکیده
Introduction Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy of the brain reveals a wealth of metabolic information, not only from a single region of interest (single voxel MRS), but spatially mapped over potentially the entire brain as well (MRSI). Particularly for relatively highly concentrated compounds in the brain with weakly or non-coupled spin systems with relatively long T2 relaxation properties, like the methyl proton spins in NAA at 2 ppm, in total creatine at 3.0 ppm or in total choline at 3.2 ppm, MRSI has successfully been applied in research studies as well as in clinical practice [1].

Handling macromolecule signals in the quantification of the neurochemical profile.
In vivo localized proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H MRS) became a powerful and unique technique to non-invasively investigate brain metabolism of rodents and humans. The main goal of 1H MRS is the reliable quantification of concentrations of metabolites (neurochemical profile) in a well-defined region of the brain. The availability of very high magnetic field strengths combined with th...
متن کاملAltered neurochemical profile after traumatic brain injury: 1H-MRS biomarkers of pathological mechanisms
Specific neurochemicals measured with proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H-MRS) may serve as biomarkers of pathological mechanism in the brain. We used high field in vivo (1)H-MRS to measure a detailed neurochemical profile after experimental traumatic brain injury (TBI) in rats. We characterized neurochemical changes in the contused cortex and the normal-appearing perilesional hippocam...
متن کاملNeurochemical profile of the mouse hypothalamus using H MRS at 14.1T
INTRODUCTION H MRS of murine brain mostly focused on striatum, hippocampus and cerebellum etc (1). H MRS of small structures, such as hypothalamus has not been reported. High magnetic fields have been shown capabilities to sustain high SNRs and allow studying small volumes, such as in transgenic mouse (1, 2). To demonstrate the ability to study transgenic mice, we sought to investigate glucose ...
متن کاملNeurochemical profile of the mouse hypothalamus using in vivo 1H MRS at 14.1T.
The hypothalamus plays an essential role in the central nervous system of mammals by among others regulating glucose homeostasis, food intake, temperature, and to some extent blood pressure. Assessments of hypothalamic metabolism using, e.g. (1)H MRS in mouse models can provide important insights into its function. To date, direct in vivo (1)H MRS measurements of hypothalamus have not been repo...
متن کاملIn vivo localized two dimensional MR spectroscopy to compare the neurochemical profile in wild-type and transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease
Introduction Currently a definitive diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is only possible postmortem, by detecting the two hallmarks of the disease: amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain tissue. There is thus a great need for in vivo biomarkers to diagnose AD with high specificity and sensitivity. Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (H MRS) provides a non-invasive way to ...
